Gaston County Leaders Elected to Statewide Board of Directors

Two respected local government leaders— Dallas Mayor Hayley Beaty and Gastonia City Manager Michael Peoples—have been elected to the Board of Directors for the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM), a member-driven organization that represents the interests of cities and towns in the state and is committed to advancing excellence in local governance.

Mayor Beaty and Mr. Peoples were sworn in May 1 with other newly-elected board members during the league’s 2025 CityVision Conference in Greenville, NC. Their appointments highlight not only their individual leadership and dedication, but also the growing influence of Gaston County’s communities in shaping policy and driving innovation across North Carolina.

Mayor Beaty expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to serve, noting that the appointment reflects the collaborative spirit of local governments across the region.

“It is a privilege to be appointed to a second term on the NCLM Board of Directors to advocate for municipalities across the state and for managers that work for North Carolina villages, towns, and cities,” said Peoples. “I enjoy working together with other board members and staff to continue the tradition of good governance in North Carolina.”

Elected Mayor of Dallas in 2023, Beaty brings a keen sense of community as a lifelong resident, educator, and coach. Before stepping into the role of Mayor, with a decade of experience teaching high school and coaching, she earned recognition as the 2021 Bessemer City High School Teacher of the Year and was a Top 5 Finalist for Most Inspirational Teacher in 2018. As one of the youngest Mayors in North Carolina, Beaty quickly established herself as a proactive leader.

Michael Peoples, has more than 25 years of experience in local government management and has served as City Manager for the City of Gastonia since 2017. Prior to that, he served as Director of Enterprise Services and Assistant City Manager of Operations. Before coming to Gastonia, Michael served as Town Manager for the Town of Cramerton (2005-2015) and as Town Administrator in Grifton, NC (2000-2005).
