If you live in Gaston County, you CAN get a smoke alarm (formerly called detector) through a program sponsored by Gaston County Emergency Management & Fire Services.
Who can get a smoke alarm?
If you live in the city limits of Gastonia or Gaston County, own your home and do not have a smoke alarm in your home, you are eligible to get a one through this program. If you rent your home, your landlord is required by law (§42-42) to install a properly operating smoke alarm. You and/or your landlord are responsible for maintaining the smoke alarm by replacing the battery (recommended twice per year) in your home.
How can I get a smoke detector?
If you need a smoke alarm for your home:
- Click here if you live in the city limits of Gastonia. (If you live in Gaston County call 704.866.3350).
- Fill out the Smoke Alarm Request Form.
- Information will be sent to us.
- A fire department representative will contact you to schedule a date/time for installation.
If you do not have access to a computer to fill out a request form, please call 704.866.6807 during regular business hours. When you call, you will need to give your name, address, and telephone number. We will then call you to arrange a time to visit your home to install a smoke alarm.
Will I have to pay?
There's no charge for smoke alarms that are installed.
