City of Gastonia Partners with Peel Scooters for New Pilot Program

The City of Gastonia has announced it is partnering with Peel Scooters to launch a new electric scooter pilot program. The Gastonia City Council approved an agreement for the Peel Scooters Pilot Program during its regular meeting on November 19, 2024. The program will run for one year with the option to renew and will not cost the City any money. Peel has agreed to pay the City five cents per ride. This program follows a previous pilot with Bird Rides, Inc., which operated in the Downtown Gastonia area from 2021 to 2023.

The Peel Scooters can be used along Franklin Boulevard, in the area from West Garrison Boulevard to South Broad Street, which includes the Loray Mill and FUSE Districts, CaroMont Health Park, and Downtown Gastonia. Up to 25 scooters will be available throughout the downtown area.

“We are excited to bring Peel Scooters to Gastonia,” said Assistant City Manager Quentin McPhatter. “This program gives residents and visitors a fun, convenient way to get around to key destinations while promoting safe, multi-modal transportation.”

 Ride Details:

  • Cost: $1.00 to unlock, $0.40 per minute
  • City ordinance prohibits the use of scooters on sidewalks, trails, and other public areas like Eastridge Mall.

The City of Gastonia believes the pilot program will encourage safe, multi-modal access to key destinations, complementing walking, driving, biking, public transit, and other transportation options.

Safety while riding scooters is important. The City of Gastonia strongly recommends that riders use the scooters safely and responsibly, being aware of traffic flow and City ordinances.

Here are some safety tips for riders:

  • Conduct a safety check of the scooter and take a test ride.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Plan your trip ahead of time to avoid being rushed.
  • Ride solo.
  • Do not drink and ride.
  • Return the scooter to an upright position, away from traffic and pedestrians.
