City of Gastonia and Gaston County Partner to Provide Cooling Locations During Extreme Heat

The City of Gastonia and Gaston County are partnering to provide residents with access to cooling locations during periods of extreme heat this summer.

Earlier this year, the City of Gastonia issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a nonprofit or community organization to operate a seasonal cooling station for residents in need of relief from high temperatures. The City did not receive any proposals from this process after over a month of advertising.

Following that process, City and County officials worked together to identify an alternative approach that utilizes existing public facilities throughout the community. With the exception of the Gaston County Administration Building and the Gaston County Public Health Department (which is currently undergoing renovation work), residents seeking relief during periods of extreme heat are encouraged to visit community centers, county libraries, and other public facilities during their normal operating hours.

"This partnership allows us to continue supporting residents during periods of extreme heat by making use of facilities that are already available throughout our community," said City Manager Michael Peoples.

There will be a designated space in the City’s community centers that will serve as a cooling area when temperatures are forecasted to be 95 degrees or higher. The National Weather Service (NWS) website will be used to determine the temperature for each day. Determination will be made by 10:00 a.m., at least 48 hours in advance. Hours of operation will be 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. These spaces will be available June 15 through September 15.

These cooling locations are intended to provide temporary relief from extreme heat conditions. Food and water will not be provided, as these facilities are not operating as cooling stations or shelters. However, water fountains are available at the locations.

Visitors using public facilities as cooling locations are expected to follow all facility rules and policies. Existing regulations regarding conduct, attire, prohibited items, operating hours, and use of public property will continue to be enforced to help ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all visitors.

“The summer heat can be just as dangerous as the freezing temperatures during some winter nights,” Deputy Gaston County Manager Vincent Wong said. “This is about doing our part to provide relief, and we encourage others with the same capacity in our community to do the same.”

Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Gastonia and Gaston County social media channels for heat safety information and updates throughout the summer.
