City of Gastonia & Two Rivers Utilities Encourage Water Conservation

The City of Gastonia and Two Rivers Utilities (TRU) is asking residents and businesses to conserve water. This comes after the Catawba–Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group declared a Stage 1 (Voluntary) drought for the Catawba–Wateree River Basin due to rapidly developing dry conditions.

The Catawba–Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group is a coalition of local water utilities, including TRU, as well as cities, industries, and Duke Energy, that rely on water from the basin.

At this stage, residents and businesses are not required to limit water use, but they are strongly encouraged to conserve water where possible. The goal is for all users to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 3 to 5 percent or more.

Residents and businesses can take simple steps to help reduce overall demand and protect the community’s water supply, such as:

  • Shortening Showers
  • Limiting outdoor watering
  • Washing full loads of laundry
  • Running the dishwasher when full of dishes

City officials will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if further measures become necessary.
