Gastonia City Manager Presents Recommended FY2027 Budget to City Council

Gastonia City Manager Michael Peoples presented the recommended Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 budget to the City Council during its Regular Meeting on Monday, May 4, outlining a financial plan focused on maintaining essential services, supporting strategic priorities, and preparing for continued growth.

The proposed budget totals $378.75 million and reflects the City’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while balancing operational needs and long-term investments.

Key highlights of the proposed FY 2027 budget include:

  • No Property Tax Increase: Property tax rate remains at $0.47 per $100 valuation
  • Electric Rates Stable: No increase in electricity rates
  • Water and Sewer Adjustment: A 7.5% rate increase to support system maintenance and infrastructure needs
  • Solid Waste Fee Update: Residential collection fees would increase by $2 per month, with an additional $2.50 per month for each extra cart.
  • Stormwater Fee Unchanged: No changes to the stormwater fee.
  • GOGastonia Rate Adjustment: Proposed updates to GOGastonia fares include:
  • Regular one-way fare increasing from $2.50 to $3.00
  • Reduced one-way fare (elderly and disabled) increasing from $1.25 to $1.50
  • A new distance-based surcharge for trips over 5 miles: $1.00 (regular fare) and $0.50 (reduced fare)
  • Employee Investment: The budget includes a 3.5% across-the-board pay increase for employees, along with an additional 1% increase for those who complete the City’s career development program, effective January 1, 2027.

The recommended budget was developed based on current economic conditions, operational demands, and the City Council’s priorities, with a continued focus on delivering reliable services and supporting the community.

The City Council will consider adoption of the FY 2027 budget at its Regular Meeting on Tuesday, June 2, with the new fiscal year set to begin on July 1, 2026. Residents can review the full recommended budget document on the City’s website.
